That is one of my favorite quotes from the book.

I like that quote as well MissJen.

Before revamping the books, i always thought he became a doctor because of the access it would give him to human blood, without having the victims to think about. Although that didn't pan out and didn't seem to be the case.

If he didn't have anything to repent for, I see your point. He didn't have to become a doctor to appease the deeds his did as a vampire if he only ate animals.

Maybe he became a doctor to have a constant reminder of the humanity of the world he was living in. If you are constantly curing peoples medical problems so they can go on and live another day, you are reminded that the lives around you are valuable, fragile, worth saving.

I agree. He is a very compassionate being. He agonizes over the pain and illnesses of the world.

Carlisle is a compassionate man. He was that way even before he was turned into a vampire. When he tells the story of his father it's obvious that he was uncomfortable with the zealous witch hunting that was going on. He felt his father was too quick to judge. After he was bitten his compassion showed through in this inability to hunt humans. I think this compassion combined with his powers led him to a career in medicine. It was a natural fit.

There is so much to his character! I hope that one day we will know more about our Dr. Cullen!

I'm with you AmyO. I think compassion is a wonderful trait for a doctor to have. That said, why are so many sadistic?

Maybe. It wouldn't be much of a life, though.

I could def see the benefits of a doctor being a vampire....the biggest one is not needing sleep! No more sleep deprived residents caring for patients at the hospital. Not to mention perfectly steady hands for suturing!

He made a difference to so many people. If he hadn't become a doctor, Edward and Esme would have died.
