There's a scene midway through Twilight in which, for the first time, Edward leans in close and sniffs the aroma of Bella's exposed neck. "Just because I'm resisting the wine doesn't mean I can't appreciate the bouquet," he says. "You have a very floral smell, like lavender ... or freesia." He barely touches her, but there's more sex in that one paragraph than in all the snogging in Harry Potter.

love that line.... I would totally have to agree, her books make me more swoony that i thought possible, but are so CLEAN! think thats another reason why i love them so much!

What makes Meyer's books so distinctive is that they're about the erotics of abstinence. Their tension comes from prolonged, superhuman acts of self-restraint. There's a scene midway through Twilight in which, for the first time, Edward leans in close and sniffs the aroma of Bella's exposed neck. "Just because I'm resisting the wine doesn't mean I can't appreciate the bouquet," he says. "You have a very floral smell, like lavender ... or freesia." It's never quite clear whether Edward wants to sleep with Bella or rip her throat out or both, but he wants something, and he wants it bad, and you feel it all the more because he never gets it. That's the power of the Twilight books: they're squeaky, geeky clean on the surface, but right below it, they are absolutely, deliciously filthy.

For me..that says it all..why Steph's books are so great and why I love them. Awesome article TIME and I love the illustration also.

That last paragraph is also my favorite part. To me that perfectly encapsulates why I got addicted to these books!

*raises hand in hair* Me! I have no idea who "Wanda" is. But I just listened to one of the Borders video interviews with Stephenie (warning- I thought there were too many spoilers in the discussion, so I stopped before it finished) and she mentions "Wanderer" and "Melanie" as the two female characters sharing the same body. So I think maybe Time confused "Wanda" for "Wanderer?" That's just a guess- if anyone knows for sure, let me know. I'm curious, too.

Yes I'm sure that's who they meant, but I haven't seen the character listed anywhere yet as Wanda.

I honestly am just plain grateful that Time Magazine wrote such glowing words about the series and didn't pan it as Teen Fic that's wildly popular. They totally see it how adults see it and it's fantastic. A Very Mature and delightful review.
