I decided to start a new thread because this topic seems to be leaking into each of the other topics...and quite frankly, I think it deserves it's own thread....

Did the language the author used in the book offend or upset you?

AND...(I was just thinking about this as I read the other thread.) IF the book had been written without the language he used, would it have been the same?

I am not sure the book would have been the same had the author not written it the way he did. I think it accentuated the story and made it more realistic since it is written from a teenage boy's perspective.

The language didn't bother me at all...I was a little surprised that they were in a teen novel, but it still didn't bother me. In fact, sometimes it was downright funny! I found myself laughing out loud on many times throughout the book!

I think the book would've been great with or without the language. I think for me, what made some parts so funny is the crude humor. The 'tree fag' comment and Junior's response, was by far one of my favorite parts! But I don't think that the choice words in the book were abused. They were used appropriately, and in good humor. Very Happy

I was shocked to open a YA novel and discover such colorful language but not offended at all. I like what SM has said in the past about Twilight and that not all teens swear or drink or do drugs - but lets face it a lot of kids do. And if I were Junior I might be compelled to say a few of those words too. The language made the book feel more authentic.

I was not bothered by it... It really made me think of all my friends when I was 14 (they were mostly boys) and if he had written it differently it would not have felt really authentic to me. I agree with Cali too in that it all just added to the humor for me. I was practically hyperventilating a couple times I was laughing so hard.

The language didn't offend me at all. I really enjoyed the book and since I have a 13 year old son it seemed to be pretty close to what they think (and say when they don't think Mom is listening). I do however think that it would have been a wonderful classroom tool for teachers if the language wasn't as strong. Just my opinion.

I could seriously have done without the language but it didn't offend me.

it disturbed me a little in the beginning, and then i never even noticed it. i think about the book not having the language it had, and i think it would of been too sugar coated for me. i liked how raw and real it made the story.

I was a little taken aback at first by it, but I realized that it was essential to the storyline, because it was written by a teenage boy, therefore, giving it a more realistic feel the language and vernacular were necessary. If he would have walked around saying golly gee, I may have really questioned the validity of it.

My boyfriend and I went to Sherman's book signing. Phillip and I had already read the book and are not shy of colorful language. But not everyone there had read the book so you can imagine how hilarious it was when he started reading from one of the chapters. There were these little gasps every now and then and Sherman would look up and say "Oh, relax."

Sherman is so AMAZING. He (admittedly) improvises while he is reading and will stop randomly and say things like "Crap, I should have used that line." or "So here is the LONG version of what happened."

I think the language was fantastic. It was real and gritty and honest. The story would have suffered without it. I think, anyway.

I thought the language was funny. I have a sick, twisted sense of humor though. I think it's odd when people get offended by things they read like that though. It's told from the view of a 14 year old boy who is drowning in his own life. I don't think he was swearing enough.

I thought the language was great, It is totally REALISTIC. We might not approve, but this is how the kids speak, and well, I think I am older than most of you and they, and I, spoke this way when I was growing up.

Look, kids do not read enough these days. If reading this book encourages them to read another book and than another, I say go for it!!

I think I was only bothered for a second because It made me feel old!!
I used to talk worse then that at that age! Id forgotten that.

I loved that it was written exactly how a young boy would react to things! Like all the boner and hormonal talk.

That stuff was an intricate part of us being able to really look thru his eyes and experience what he was feeling- thinking - and saying.

I thought it was realistic. That's the way teenage boys talk. Actually, let's be honest, most boys have much fouler mouths than the kids in the book!
