Post subject: ? SUGGESTIONS - Good books to read-what can follow Twilight?
PostPosted: Wed Dec 19, 2007 7:49 pm
O.k....so I know we've been talking about books in one of the other threads. I'm sure no one else has this problem  but with how much we are growing it is REALLY hard to keep up with all of the threads and to find certain topics when we have totally gone the opposite direction of the original topic in the middle of a thread.

Anyway...as mentioned a couple of times...I use to read ALL OF THE TIME. I ALWAYS had my nose in a book. I didn't read a lot of the "classics" but I've read a lot of books.

When I first finished the Twilght series I could not bring myself to read anything else. I mean, really, what could compare. But then I started in a book club and they were reading A Thousand Splendid Suns...which is VERY different than Twilight but it was able to get me reading something other than Twilight again (which I still read along with whatever I am reading).

Anyway....because of Twilight and t/moms, I have wanted to read some of the classics mentioned. I started P&P and had a really hard time with at first, however, I am about 1/2 done now, finally and can't put it down. There has been talk of C&R, Gone with the Wind, Wuthering Heights, of course....I would just like to get some ideas of some good books to read. I like romance, action, mystery, all kinds of books but because of kids, church jobs, etc., etc., just haven't read for almost 11 years. Please tell me your favorite books.

Here are some of my favorites from this year's reading list.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel by Diane Setterfield

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

Labyrinth by Kate Mosse

Also, if you like period romances, anything by Laura Kinsale is good.

Oh, you must read Gone with the Wind. It's so wonderful. It looks pretty daunting, but it's not a very difficult read. Very romantic. Before Edward Cullen, there was Rhett Butler (although he was a scoundrel).

I love Jane Eyre also.

I'm reading Wuthering Heights right now. I don't know how Bella can stand it. LOL. But I will finish, hopefully by Christmas, because...

Next up after Wuthering Heights is my reread of the Twilight series (getting my own copies for Christmas), then I'm on to Interview with the Vampire (haven't read it in like 10 years). I'm hooked on, erm, juicy literature right now.

Kristi! Im so glad to hear that about gone with the wind. After hearing it talked about round her somewhere (I agree about it being a bit more difficult to keep up with this place! )
I just picked it up as my next read Im hoping to get a chance to start today.
I just finished P&P - I loved that! Almost read it again right away - if I wasnt so hungry to keep reading something new - otherwise Id be tempted to revamp!!

Rhonda, you'll have to let me know what you think of GWTW. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'll have to put that in the rotation after Interview.

There is a search feature on this forum up at the top by the FAQ link. It's helped me a few times when I needed to find something. The other thing you can do if you know who wrote the post is to click on memberlist and then you can view all posts by that person, very helpful when I was trying to find the link to gypsy's blog the other day...although if it is Twila who wrote it  don't even try scrolling through her 400+ posts to find what you are looking for. :P

Gypsy and I were just posting the other day about interview with the vampire( she was into it about 10 years ago too! )
About 10 years ago I was a HUGE HUGE anne rice fan. Then after angels and demons her books changed quite a bit and I havn't gotten back into her since.
One of my all time favorite books was witching hour - thats a huge undertaking to read and keep up with all the charactors that overlap each other. I keep wanting to re read that one soon.

Im hoping to do GWTW over the next week... Then we can dish!!

A lot of book suggestions are under "entertainment". I'm just pimping the book, "These is My Words" because I want to talk to someone else about it. I wrote about it under that thread.

I read the first page of that book years ago and returned it to the library. I've heard good things about it and wanted to read it but I never did.

You have to get through the first 30 or 40 pages. It's a little hard to get used to because it's written as a journal entry and at first she's uneducated. Stick with it though---you'll love it!

Gypsy -
Wicked ? Reallly? did you like it?
I couldnt stand that book - well about 75% of it I couldnt stand -
The musical however - absolutly brilliant as they took the 25% of the book that was amazing and ran with it.
Wicked the book - painful to get thru
Wicked the musical - amazing!

I saw Wicked a couple of months ago and was blown away! I don't dare read the book because I'm afraid it will ruin the show for me.
