OK so Lisa 314 suggested we start a new thread for this topic that came up in the Easter thread so here it is.

What are you St. Patty's Day Traditions?

I always make corned beef and cabbage. My kids love it. And we always have green jello. and I put green food coloring in their milk. Also sometime during the day the leprechaun comes and messes up their rooms (turns chairs over, hangs clothes from the light -silly stuff) but leaves gold foiled chocolate coins (or some other green candy or "money" type candy) in the mess as a thank you for cleaning up the mess he made. All day my kids keep checking their rooms to see if things are out of place and if the leprechaun has come yet. It's funny because for days after that whenever they see a mess in the house they think the leprechaun did it! A friend of mine used to make a path of shamrocks in her house that led to a pot of the chocolate gold coins and a mixture of real pennies, dimes, nickles and quarters to which her kids would sit down and split it up. Her kids are too old for it now but I think it is a cute idea.

:)

Even though I am Italian through and through, I love St. Pats Day. My family won't eat corn beef and cabbage so I always get together with my mil and her and I feast on it. Also, I am fanatical about having holiday placemats on my kitchen table for each of the holidays. St Pat's Day was the only one I couldn't find last year and was so disappointed. I happened to be in a Home Goods store the other day looking for something completely unrelated when I stumbled across placemats and napkins for St Pats Day. I bought them immediately and put them on my table this morning!!! :D

Okay... I love this stuff!! Read about my Valentine's Traditions to in that thread. For St. Pat's Day, we of course have green meals all day. Green pancakes, green muffins, green scrambled eggs, and green milk. I make everything green for dinner, green beans, edamome, (no peas :x ) salad, green mashed potatoes, green jello, etc. Of course the table is all decoretd in green.

I got these ideas from the company Once Upon a Family:
Lucky We Have each Other: Declare St. Patrick's Day your family's day to reflect on how lucky you are to have each other. Prepare a "Lucky Us" book (a little scrapbook, green preferably) and fill it with family pictures. Pass the scrapbook around to each family member so they can write or draw why they are lucky to be in this family. You can also write what a younger dictatesto you. Take out your "Lucky Us" scrapbook each year and write in it and reread past year's messages.

Pretend you are a leprechaun and make someone's day: Make special St. Pat's treats, load them up on a plate, seal with green Saran Wrap, attach a special note for the lads and laddies in your neighborhood, and go knock on their door. Remember, you are a sneaky leprechaun, so don't let anyone see ya!

We are so Lucky(Blessed): Take a jar or box and decorate with a geen ribbon. Have a little bowl of pennies on the table next to the jar. At dinner, each person can drop in a penny and say what they are lucky/blessed to have. Pretty soon, the jar in filled up with pennies and your family will see how truley lucky they are. Then you can donate the money to an organization that helps people who aren't so lucky. Last year my four year son LOVED this idea. He came up with so many wonderful things he felt blessed to have. It was a very special thing for my husband and I to see. We were so proud of him!

Like I said, most of these ideas came form the beautiful company called Once Upon a Family, so I cannot take credit for them. I hope you enjoy these St. Patrick's Day traditions and have fun! Sorry I wrote so much!!

I always take my daughter & nefew to the big parade downtown. We sit on cold concret in layers of clothes & blankets to watch political officials & groups walk by with fleeting hopes that some one will be throwing candy from the parade when we are not waiting in 15 minute johny on the spot lines or waiting for overpriced food.

Good times good times, thier glowing faces make up for all my suffering.

Ugh. I always dreaded St. Patrick's Day up until the year I started dating my husband and didn't have to participate anymore (conveniently scheduled a date that night). My mom always made corned beef and cabbage and potatoes every year. That's 3 strikes right there. She did make a delicious dill bread that went with it though. The meal was complete and utter torture aside from the dill bread!

My mom did do something fun though that wasn't gross. She green food colored everything in my lunch so when I got to school and opened up my lunchbox, I had a thermos of green milk, green applesauce, jello, etc. I guess my sandwich was normal color now I think about it. *phew*
