OK, In NM when Bella goes into the woods after Edward leaves her (that jerk) and everyone is looking for her the person who finds her is Sam. BUT why did it take them so long to find her? AS a werewolf, don't you think he would have used his senses to sniff her out sooner? That was just bothering me as I revamped!

We don't know at what point the werewolves entered the search. I'm guess Charlie searched by himself for a while, then called in his friends at the station, and then maybe the neighbors. I think that when the pack finally got in on the search it didn't take very long.

So, I think that the third growling was Jacob's motorcycle racing towards her, the motorcycle cut off as Jacob got to her, then he took the motorcycle off of her.

That's exactly how I read it too. It doesn't say anywhere during this time that Sam was watching them. Maybe someone posted that on forum on another site thinking they thought Sam was watching them. I believe during this ride, Sam was w/ the others cliff jumping.

Yeah I was thinking that and I was trying to get a grasp on time up to that point. It was at least 12 hours that she was out there in the woods. I just felt so bad for Bella. I knew she would be found but I hate revamping that part in NM. It really makes me mad!

That's what I always thought it could be, I mean if it WAS the werewovles, wouldn't Jacob get quite scared to see werewolves in the area?

This is a Sam-question totally unrelated to the motorcycle incident

At what point did you get to like Sam (if you did)?

Funny thing is I don't quite remember myself.... I'd always kinda liked Sam's cool attitude even when Bella was angry with him and wisheed she was a vampire just to scare him (she didn't know about him being a werewolf of course).

Sam was in the area at the time, cliff-diving. And, he does seem particularly watchful over Bella...

Was he already a werewolf when Bella first saw him at the beach?

That's true! Being an Idaho girl, I was thinking of the ones that come inland there, which would be happening about now. But on the coast they spawn later. Instead of late spring, probably more like late summer.

I was thinking Pink Salmon- which are August - October. So maybe during their sophomore year. That would make it a little over a year- in March when Charlie tells Bella.

Wait-don't mix up when Sam first phased with when he injured Emily. If he injured Emily in late summer, early fall, that would be the beginning of Bella's and Leah's junior year (They're seniors in New Moon). But, Sam probably first phased during their sophomore year. He and Leah were together for a while after he first phases.

Leah first phases a week or so after the conversation with Charlie.

I have always been a little unclear as to when exactly Sam first phased, and how long afterward he imprinted, and then how long after that before he injured Emily. ??

Leah first phases the morning Bella jumped off the cliff.

I don't think we have enough information to pinpoint it any better than I have above. The original question (here) was whether he was a werewolf when Bella first saw him on the beach. The answer is yes, and that Emily had already been injured.

I don't know when he phased or how long after he imprinted. Long enough for him to have an estrangement with Leah and for them to be working it out (according to Jacob). But in NM, Charlie told Bella that Emily was hurt at the start of spawning season, which a wonderful TM posted was about 18 months earlier, so the start of Bella's Junior year (Just a few months before moving to Forks). The Cullens came back 3 years before this (1st day, Jessica said they had been there 2 years and this is a year later). That would have been Bella's Freshman year. If Emily was a result of a new born Wolf's inability to control, I would say Sam probably changed within 6 months of the incident, putting it at Bella's Sophomore year, or that summer at least.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

I've always been really drawn to Sam. Even seeing him through Bella's mistrusting and resentful eyes, he comes across to me as someone very special. Or maybe I just like enigmatic men (in literature, that is. In real life I prefer them much more readable, if you'll excuse the pun).

I don't remember either. I only know I was partial to him and the rest of the pack more than most of the other characters in the book because the Quileutes just came across as people I'd be able to relate to best if they were real.

With Sam, specifically, I have a love/dislike relationship. If I were to guess, I started likeing him a little when he found Bella because he came across as this larger than life protector and that just grew after his secret came out. A large part of me adores him because I get the impression that he's strong, intense and responsible.

However, there's always that little part of me asking, "If Imprinting means you can be a friend, brother, lover or protector, why couldn't Sam try for the friend / brother role with Emily?" Of course, I don't know the actual mechanics of Imprinting so I hope Stephenie Meyer will shed some light on it in BD (or any subsequent books).

I think imprinting means you're all of these things, not one or some. You might have some choice as to which of these aspects you portray most at a certain time in the relationship, but you're still all of them. This makes you able to provide for your love object what they most require at a given stage of their life, because you don't really have a choice not to be what they need. That's what imprinting looks like to me.

There are several threads with fascinating discussions on imprinting at these threads:

I agree with Shimmerskin - whether it be love as a brother, friend, lover, etc. the werewolf imprinting would have all those, depending on what the imprintee (the one being imprinted upon) needs most in that time of their life.

Jacob had explained this when he was telling Bella about Quil and Claire. As a little girl (toddler), Claire will obviously not need a boyfriend - she will want a "big brother" and that is how Quil will view her. As long as that is what Claire wants, Quil will not be seeing Claire as anything other than a treasured sister. As she gets a little older (the pre-boys stage), she might want a friend, and Quil will become her best friend and nothing more. Claire will grow up and will inevitably want a boyfriend or life partner, eventually. And Quil will become just that.

The form of love in imprinting is very liquid, IMO. It doesn't matter what shape or form the container has - liquid will be poured into it, filling it accordingly. Even as Claire's "container" changes as she grows up, the liquid itself will not change (it is still unconditional love), but it will mold itself according to the container. My two cents
