I have to admit, this was not who I was currently working on snagging for our next featured artist. I got an email 2 days ago suggesting a new song that was written specifically because of Twilight by an up and coming artist. I quickly jumped on iTunes and downloaded the song and now I can't stop listening to it!

Behold, I present you with "The Meadow" by Kate Myers.

First of all, she's got a great last name. Wink

Second of all, she perfectly captures Bella's thoughts during that glorious scene in Twilight with the lyrics and also with the dreamlike piano reflecting her experience (as well as ours, the readers) and the poignantly bittersweet, burning strains of the violin reflecting Edward's feelings. The song is simply as beautiful as the scene itself. Last, but not least, isn't Kate beautiful? She looks a little like a Meyer vampire here, no?

Kate told me how "The Meadow" came about. She said, "I actually wrote the song before I knew that it was going to turn into a movie. The friend who sent you to me gave me the book a long time ago as a Christmas present and I was so inspired by the Confessions chapter that I had to put the book down right then and there and sit at the piano. My heart was bursting with emotion and inspiration and the song came out in like 20 minutes! It was crazy! I don't know if I've ever been so proud of a song...

"In terms of constructing “The Meadow,” I could easily identify which parts of the song I wanted to sound mysterious and curious as to relate to Bella and Edward constantly testing their boundaries of what they can and cannot do with each other, based on the obvious differences in their ‘natural’ urges. On the other hand, I wanted the sound to be completely innocent and submissive as if Bella and Edward do not even care that there is this difference – that they can get around it because their love is so strong that they should be able to make it work, no matter what.

"Instrumentally and vocally, I wanted to compose the different layers of “The Meadow” in close relation to Twilight. Edward plays the piano, and beautifully at that. He writes a song, a sort of lullaby for Bella so it was very clear to me to use the piano as the main instrument. I designated the voice of the lyrics to Bella because the book is from her point of view. So, the piano melody and lyrics was a kind of play on the two characters through mixing the song’s two main voices. Aside from the piano and vocals, I decided to write a cello line because the cello has a very melancholic, versatile sound that fits the exact emotions I wanted to provoke and convey through the entire song. The timbre of the instruments is very specific but still very flexible. I find that with string instruments I can do a lot more than one would think by using just one extra instrument.

"This song could just as easily take to huge production as it could to a simple cello accompaniment, but I wanted to keep it simple because that's how the chapter was. It was one of the most intense chapters, but no action really happened. The emotion provoked from the two during that chapter was crazily intense, but it was basically all an explanation of the feelings and senses that were activated, for lack of a better word. Thus, in “The Meadow,” the piano is Edward, the vocals are Bella, and the cello is the emotion aroused from these two people interacting.

I also just discovered another song on her new album that wasn't inspired by Twilight but reminds me of it nonetheless. It is "Hello" and I think the lyrics read like Bella's bad luck, the rain in Forks and how Edward protects her from herself and all her little black clouds that follow her. Now all of you are probably thinking, "Wouldn't it be great if "The Meadow" was on the Twilight movie soundtrack? Kate would love it and so would I, but come what may, I know it will be what I hear during that scene regardless. Smile

Wow...just wow. That was an amazingly touching song. I think it would be so awesome if it were on the movie soundtrack! Especially if they played part of it during the actual "meadow" scene! How do we go about petitioning for that to take place? I'm sure one of you TMs has the ear of our esteemed director Miss Catherine Hardwick... Wink

I can't remember as I'm typing this...but was there a link to where you can listen to the actual song somewhere?

Can I just say....WOW! I love the way music can make you feel and see. That song just takes you to the meadow. Must go revamp the meadow scene now!
