My thought on that is perhaps it was a test for Bella. Maybe Edward was waiting for Bella to kiss him first in front of Jacob....to make a show of affection toward Edward that would've put Edward one step ahead of Jacob in Bella's affections. Had she moved in to kiss Edward, he certainly would've kissed her back. Now I'm kinda ticked off at Bella for NOT kissing Edward! |
I agree with you. I hadn't thought about this until now, but while I do think that Edward is pretty secure about him and Bella, I also think there is a part of him that is still a little bit insecure (jealous...). I could definitely see him wanting to her to be the one to show affection in front of Jacob at that point in the story... |
I never even thought of that...Edward being insecure enough to want Bella to make the first move in front of Jacob. But I think you're right. I'm a little ticked off at her myself!

There might be a twinge of insecurity. If you think back to Twilight, how many times did Edward hint at her telling Charlie that she would be spending time with him. Granted, he would say something along the lines of it being because of her safety (reason to bring her back), but I think that there was more to it. I think he wanted her to tell Charlie about him.
He very well might want her to be affectionate towards him in front of her best friend (although there is the whole all fair in love and war thing as well).
Edward is also a gentleman and while he is very affectionate with Bella, he doesn't seem to be into hardcore "PDA" in front of anyone but the Cullens. _________________

I found another place where Edward kisses Bella in front of Jacob. When Edward brings Jacob back after he overheard that they were getting married. When he goes off with Seth to talk to Sam, he kisses her before he leaves them to talk. At that point he isn't really confident in who Bella is going to chose. He says something like "whatever your decision."
At this point he knows there is a possiblity that Bella could choose Jacob. So now he chooses to kiss her???
Very interesting! |
. . . and maybe, since Edward was unsure at that moment who Bella would choose, he wanted to kiss her for what could possibly have been the last time. Just thinking about that possibility makes me sad. |
This is actually connected to my thinking about why he didn't kiss her before. Whenever Edward is planning on leaving Bella (Twilight before Phoenix and then definitely in New Moon and then I'm pretty sure even other places) Bella can tell that Edward is saying goodbye in his kisses. It freaks her out. He knows it freaks her out to be saying goodbye to him even for a couple of hours. Maybe he didn't want to freak her out at that particular time because he had to be a little stressed out himself at this point (handing her over to Jake) and knew that could transfer in his kiss. No need to kiss goodbye if goodbye isn't really part of the equation. Just another thought that may have fueled his actions...
And as for kissing her just before he leaves her to "talk" with Jacob: heartbreaking moment and many of you have already expressed very good reasons for the kiss and the type of kiss it was. |
I agree with you about him not kissing her to keep her somewhat calm. I mean even after he asks her to marry him and agrees to the things she wants, Bella is still very insecure about him leaving in general and like you said she can tell he is saying goodbye with his kisses . So i think that part of the reason probably was to save her sanity a bit. All of these theories are too good i think that its probably a mix of all of it he is such a complex character. _________________ "It's a good thing you're bulletproof. I'm going to need that ring. I just listened to this part yesterday and at least in the audio version, I got the impression that maybe Edward wanted to....but didn't and maybe Bella wondered why he didn't.... Just from her inflections and pauses. Hmmmm... _________________

Plus when edward did kiss bella in front of jacob it almost seemed out ao character for him, and someone said that he was just trying to provoke jacob knowiong that he couldn't cross the treaty line to do anything about it. Edward is old fashioned and in his time displays of physical emotion were a NO NO
|
Actually I wasn't sure if that's entirely true. I can't remember if this was in the book or on SM's website under Twilight outtakes, but there was a brief mentioning by Bella that Edward made it quite obvious at school after the Prom that they are an "item" and I believe he did kiss her in public in front of the other kids.
So, even as old fashioned as Edward can be, boys will be boys

all of these ideas are so well thought out. I had been wondering that myself, I found myself frustrated that it took her that long to realize that she "loved" Jacob too! But I am so for Edward/Bella, I just want them to end up happy, but I have this strange feeling something else is going to go wrong in the next book (Breaking Dawn) ugh!
I agree that Edward is very old fashioned and the way he shows his affection and love for Bella is more on a very personal/emotional level than a very physical PDA level... hey is she doesn't want Edward I'll take him... ha ha ha! _________________ "Save a horse, Ride a Vampire!"

VampFan1215 is right. somewhere in the beginning of eclipse/ end of new moon she mentions that Edward kisses her in front of people at school all the time.
I think he doesn't kiss her in front of Jake because he's not trying to start anything. Also they are engaged at this point. I think at this moment he's actually pretty secure about her feelings. It's not until he realizes how jealous he is about Jake warming her up in the tent that things start to get a little sticky. _________________ I touched the cool miracle of his skin , and I was home. ---Bella

Everyone has such good ideas as to why Edward didn't kiss her, but yeah, it was a moment where he should have! _________________

I agree. He is grateful to the wolves, especially Jacob, for their help. Why antagonize him now? He knows how Jacob feels and Jacob is doing him a favor right now - so why make it worse? _________________

I agree that Edward feels secure in his relationship with Bella, but I think it goes beyond that.
Edward respects Jacob. Jacob is the one that got Sam and the pack to join forces with the Cullens to fight Victoria and the newborn army. Why would he do something that could potentially disrupt the alliance?
He obviously trusts Bella and knows that Jacob would do anything to protect her. If he was still threatened by Jacob, then I think he would have insisted that Seth or someone else be the one to carry Bella.

I agree with this. I also think that Edward doesn't want to put Bella in a situation where she is uncomfortable. She knows Jake has feelings for her and I am sure she doesn't want to rub her relationship in his face. I think Edward respects that. _________________

I always wondered about this too! But then again, it's true he doesn't kiss her in front of Jacob except that one time... It probably is for Bella's feelings, not wanting to put her in the middle of anything. And maybe he thinks it would have been like a "kiss goodbye" sorta kinda, or maybe he thought it was what Bella would have interpreted it as, as she dissects all of their kisses! But then again, he couldn't read her thoughts to know that... explain, Stephanie, please! In conclussion, he should have kissed her regardless! It could have been for good luck! _________________ Bella: I can't dance. Edward: Hmmm... well I could always make you. Me: *faint*
