|
|
I looked around and didn't see this anywhere, so I hope it has not been addressed already somewhere else.
When Bella tells Jacob that she and Edward will leave town before she he is changed, he tells her that the treaty between werewolves and vampires states that the Cullens can't bite anyone, anywhere, and that it will, in effect, start a war.
But then this possibility seems to be downplayed, if not non-existent, by the end of the book.
What am I missing?

That's a good question, Reader! IMHO, by the end of Eclipse, the treaty became obsolete. There were unprecedented events that took place between the wolf pack and the Cullens by the end of the book; the most significant being that they formed an alliance against the newborns. Up to that point, the wolves and the vamps were mortal enemies. Now, suddenly, you have Billy and Sam trusting Carlisle, Edward and Seth becoming friends, Jacob accepting that Bella loves Edward and wants, more than anything, to be with him eternally. Up to this point, the wolves had never known anyone who was making a conscious decision to be bitten. I think that in and of itself makes the treaty more than a little sketchy. In short, I don't see how things could ever go back to the way they were before. Thanks for such a thought provoking topic! _________________

I believe the treaty will be rewritten in BD. With their teaming up to fight the newborns, their mutual hate and distrust of the Volturi, and Edward's budding friendship with Seth -- I just can't see the treaty staying the same. _________________

What's funny is that in Eclipse chapter 11. 'Legends', it says:
"A bigger coven came, and your own great-grandfathers prepared to fight them off. But the leader spoke to Ephraim Black as if he were a man, and promised not to harm the Quileutes."
And Jacob says in Twilight, chapter 6. Scary Stories': "So you see," Jacob continued, "the cold ones are traditionally our enemies. But this pack that came to our territory during my great-grandfathers time was different. They didn't hunt the way others of their kind did - they weren't supposed to be dangerous to the tribe. So my great-grandfather made a truce with them. If they would promise to stay off our lands, we wouldn't expose them to the pale-faces."
It's basically that the Cullens promised not to harm the Quileutes and to stay off their land, and in return, the tribe would not reveal the Cullens to the humans.
The only time we think the treaty includes not biting anyone anywhere is when Jacob tells Bella this and Jacob is being upset about Bella and Edward will leave before her being bitten happens. I wonder if Jacob might have been stretching what the treaty actually says a bit to try and convince Bella that it would start a war. I mean, we know that he doesn't want her to do it. _________________

Edward was there with Carlisle at the time. He would be very familiar with the terms of the treaty. So, I don't think Jacob would get away with too much of a lie. I just think that during the first telling, he was trying to be a good storyteller, not a historian. Jacob is sent several times to relay messages. I think the others would know if he was speaking out of turn on their behalf. I'm looking for a revised treaty. Jacob's been to Edward's house, and vice versa. Both have crossed the line without fighting, perhaps Bella has taught two magnets how to coincide peacefully. _________________ Lauralee

Hmm...good points ^.
I think though that the revised treaty is a good idea and I'd like to see that happen. _________________

I also don't think it was made as a big deal for several reasons:
1) They weren't 100% sure when they would try to change Bella
2) Both sides were aware of the situation
3) Both sides knew what would happen if the treaty was broken
What's to discuss? I also think that Bella is sure the Jacob won't do anything if they leave Forks and don't come back. She doesn't think he'll chase her down once he thinks she's changed. _________________ H Cullen - living for my pull from the darkness
