Thanks Kat N Hat, I like that. I like to think that Alice was probably arguing venhemently with Edward over the whole thing. But this also makes me think she told Edward to leave the note for Charlie.....

I'm totally with you guys. I think Edward acted all on his own on this one. I would have knocked some sense into him! However, why did the whole family leave then?

Maybe a sign of solidarity with Edward, whether they agreed with him or not?

Completely. They trust him to know what he wants and love him enough to give it to him. Even when it's wrong. The Cullens are fascinating study in a strong family unit.

I just finished re-reading Chapter 3 last night and had to comment.

If I remember correctly Edward had been acting strange after the incident at Bella's party. He seemed standoffish as if he was struggling with his decision to leave. Remember she believed that it might have been her last year in Forks, hence forth the picture taking. She needed to start her scrapbook. Beliving that when Edward and his family leaves Forks she would be going with them. Alice may have picked up on how happy that thought made Bella. Then in thinking how happy Bella would be to leave Forks with Edward turned the tide and began to imagine how miserable and withdrawn she would become when Alice knew of Edward's intention to leave Bella behind.

Then again it may have flashed in Bella's mind what her existance would have been like with Edward gone after seeing his reactions during the few days that proceeded the party. Alice may have picked up on this as well.

That's an interesting train of thought and it could be a possibility because she picked up on Bella wanting to do something for the fight in Eclipse.

Yeah, but the family left that very night, the night of her party. Or at least some of them. She never did see any of them again except for Edward...and he had stayed behind. Bella had no idea at that point the affect her party had had. Therefore she wasn't thinking about leaving yet. And Alice wasn't there to talk about it anymore with Edward. It seemed to me like she left right away to be Jasper. And then Edward made his decision and that was it. I doubt she spared much thought for Bella immediately after the incident, and by the time she would have been looking, Edward had asked her not to.

Very good point. That thought never crossed my mind.

I seriously doubt Alice would do that! She loves Bella! I vote "no".

Me too. Alice would have just bitten Bella instead.. I'm kidding, but I can dream, can't I?

I too strongly believe that the break up was Edward's idea. I would think that Alice would have tried to dissuade him, if anything.

Bella did sense that Edward was growing distant. If I remember correctly, she sensed that something was up and that it wasn't going to be good.

Alice would have never encouraged Edward to break up with her. I don't think any of the Cullen's would have actually encouraged it because they have seen how happy Bella made Edward.

I bet there was a huge debate over the next move and Edward decided they should all leave town, with him leaving last.

I imagine the minute Edward was away from the family Alice checked in on Bella quite a bit.
