Today I had several conversations with a variety of women who have read both TW series and now the Host. I discovered something really interesting in their responses:
In every case, the women who thought Twilight was 'OK' were the women that LOVED the Host! (one has read it 7 times already)
...The women who found Bella to be weak, found the characteristics of Wanderer/Melanie to be completely entrancing.
...Those who felt Edward is too possessive/stalkerish are enamoured with Ian.
... The women who are "Team Jacob" seemed to like the Host more than the "Team Edward" women
... They have already read the Host more than once

Conversely, the women that are Twilight fanatics, and especially those that dream of Edward, responded more like SouthernBella quoted above.
. . . Really liked the book, but were able to put it down (unlike TW)
. . . Never felt really 'hooked' or romanticized by the characters
. . . Found it more difficult a read, but were very satisfied in the end.
. . . Read the Host once and enjoy SM's writing style

Anyone else found this to be so?

Wow - very interesting!! That sounds pretty accurate, from what I've read on TM's though.

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh man I don't get to fit into the stereo type. I am obviously a twilight fanatic a true twi-hard, and I loved the host and have read it three times already, after the first 100 pages which I had a hard time connecting with I couldn't put it down (the first 100 pages took me a week the rest took me one night). I Also love Ian he's is schmexy. I also love Edward, he dazzles me frequently I don't think he is stalkerish(in fact I thin that saying Edward and stakerish in the same sentence is blasphemy) I have dreamed about him several times (I have even dreamt of him in the tunnels and caves as part of the host, go figure) and I just loved both books differently just like bella loves Edward and Jacob differently and wanda loved Ian and Jared differently  .

I don't think I fit into either of these categories either...

I loved The Host - probably one of my favorite books ever, if I had to vote, I;d probably put it above Twilight. And I will read it again - but probably not soon. There are very few books I have read more than once. But Twilight is one of them, I've read it four times (and I just got on the SM bandwagon less than three weeks ago.) But even though I could pick up Twilight and read it again tomorrow, I still have stronger feelings about The Host. Twilight is much easier to read, and maybe that is why. but if you boil it down to characters, maybe it's because Edward is an unattainable godlike creature - Ian is human. I find Wanda/Melanie more "pleasant" to be around too...I reach a point where Bella grates on my nerves.

IDK...

Honestly, I was stuck in Chapter 3 for awhile. I was frusterated with the fact that I couldn't get into the book, nor did I really like it. One of my wonderful friends called me up the other night and we talked about the Host for a long time. She loved it and told me to keep reading.
I'm so glad she did! As soon as I got to the end of Chapter 4 I started getting into it. Now I love it! I'm not done with it yet, but it's really picked up for me.
It's a great book and I love everything about the character's Stephenie develops in her books!! I don't have a favorite one, because I like most all of them. It's definitely no Twilight, but it's a great book and one I'd read again. Twilight's a quick and easy read, while the Host isn't. Maybe it's the fact the Host deals with more real life and more current issues at hand-there's a lot of things in this book that really make you think! Stephenie did a great job in writting this book.
All her books are great!!

***(6/4) I finished it early this morning!!! I couldn't put it down. Totally love this book. I was shocked at all the emotions I felt for all the different characters. I was also shocked at how I could almost hate a few characters and by the end of the book, totally love them!

I am not done yet. I have just finished the Twilight Series for the second time and I am feeling like I am Switzerland right now. So, I don't know where I fit in the stereotype.

I read the Host & I too found it hard to get into in the beginning. But I stuck with it because I'm the type of person who won't move on to another book until I have finished the current one. (OCD much??) & I'm really glad that I did. I found that I really enjoyed the book & when it was over I wanted more. Of course I haven't been as obsessive as I have over Twighlight but I still enjoyed it. I do hope that she comes out with another for it because I would really like to see how Wanderer & Melanie move on.

I just finished the Host and..... I did not connect with any of the characters. I really enjoy SM writting style, but I just could not get into it. I did like the story and the ending, but the middle seemed to drag and I even skipped some chapters.
I am completly and uttely obsessed with Twilight and can make only two comparison.
1. I do understand now, why Edward loves Bella , but I'm still not sure how he got there, they same can be said for Ian's love for Wanda.
2. Somewhat like Bella, Wanda really isn't a strong female character, I'm hoping for someone more like Elizabeth Bennett.

SM will always be counted as one of my favorite authors now and I will read anything she writes :)

I completely agree. I enjoyed both...for different reasons, and don't easily fit into the two "types." The Twilight series is written in a style that is easy to read and character-driven. The Host was a little different, longer, had a more complex story line.
