I just finished another revamp and I was surprised how differently she treats Jacob and Edward in similar situations...

For example, Jacob is constantly using negative terms for vampires. She often tells him to stop but she's never really that mad. But when Edward did it she was shocked. The same thing goes when Jacob talks about killing Edward and then vise versa.

I dunno is it just me?

if i remember correctly and right now i dont remember what page but she says that his love is enough for her. edward does not have to buy her expensive presents.

Edward is more mature (HEHE) than Jacob and has been raised to have better manners than to name call. That is why it shcoks Bella. He is always so 'in control' around her physically, I think he restrains himself verbally too.

As far as Charlie and the truck go, it is an old beat up 'thing' and he is her father, he should give a gift once in a while. He didn't get her a graduation gift (or a card, or flowers or anything). Other than the camera, it is the only thing he gives her in the 2 years she lives with him. That we know of.

Bella hates for Charlie to give her gifts. She says as much in Ch. 1 TW, and repeats in later scenes. Or, even Renee. I don't think she likes "things", much less for people to spend their money on her. She talks about having to go shopping with Renee. Strikes me that Renee would have taken her shopping for clothes before moving to Forks. Bella would have hated it. She won't let Jacob fix the bikes for free, he has to have a trade off so she feels everything is on the up and up--an equal barter. The only reason she takes the grad. gift is because he made it with his own hands. Like the tape of music Edward gave her.

I've thought for a while that some of these gifts have more significance than we realize. The truck is a character in this saga as much as anyone else. It has protected Bella and she considers it a safe place. The new Mercedes ought to have an cool role, as well, but I don't think it is going to make it! I think that the bracelet that Jacob gave her is more of an amulet. The tradition of carving is common among Native Americans and Billy taught him how to do it. I get the feeling that Jacob gave it as a "protective charm" and with Edward's added diamond, maybe it will be even stronger.
I picture some of the gifts she has received as potential weapons or protections against the things she will face in BD---because we KNOW something is coming! Bella is going to have to pull together what she knows to stand up to "something" in this last book and I would expect she is going to have to do it on her own this time.

Cool point. I never thought of them as special protectors. Maybe the diamond heard will cut through handcuffs or something? It's like that TV guy, Mc Guyver who could use tic tacs and dental floss to escape the bad guys....at least that's the joke in our family..."If I only had some tic tacs and dental floss!"

I was thinking more along the lines of those Greek stories like Perseus where he is given the sword, helmut and shield so he can go kill Medusa, or something like that. BUT---It is hard to figure out how a truck, a bracelet, and whatever else she has received will all be "helpful" . My imagination can only stretch so far without some more guided hints.

An amulet is a life force you carry with you. When Bella tried to take the bracelet off, Edward tells her not to because it is part of her. I like this idea. She will gain strength from it, even if it is psychological.

Works for me! Hope it plays out in that way somehow!
