Incest? In this book? noway!......

 I refuse to believe that Jace and Clary are related. I had a theory about Jace after reading the second book (it's posted in the entertainment forum under COA, Don't read the thread unless you have read COA). I honestly think (or would like to believe) they are not related at all.

I totally agree with Edith, I don't think they are related at all, I think The brother and sister thing is just because Valentine "raised" Jace as his own. I am dying to read City of glass, I am not sure i can make it a whole year lol.

I am with you on that theory! There was the part in the end of COA when Jace was with the inquisitor that gave me a glimmer hope. I think most of us are on that bandwagon. It just puzzles me that everyone said how much he looked like Michael, and not Valentine. The only thing that resembled Valentine was his attitude. I am mind boggled!

I really liked COB, and was excited about the relationship between Clary and Jace until the whole brother/sister thing happened. It blew my entire perspective of the whole story; enough that I'm not sure I want to go on and finish the series.

I agree with most of the other posters here in that I sincerely hope that Clary and Jace are not brother and sister. I know Simon is an alternative for Clary, but her feelings for him just weren't there(beyond friendship), and I'd hate to see her push herself into "feelings" for him just because he is there and conveninet. Simon deserves more than that. And the fire between Clary and Jace was riveting- before C.Clare tried to make us believe that they are siblings.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing........

I really liked these books, for the most part. I did not like that Alex had feelings for his adopted brother, that was worse than the possible sibling thing to me. After reading COA though, I just can't believe they are related. I think once Jocelyn wakes up we will have a lot of truths.

I was initially repelled bythe incest theme as well, but do believe the author is using a classic narrative plot to explore the issue of identity. That said, I am in complete agreement with the posters who feel that C and J are not at all realted, and as you read through C of A this becomes clear. I'll head over to the "entertainment" forum to post my theories on how the author resolves the issue for us and spares us the hot showers Sm believes we may be in for.

I have to believe that they aren't brother and sister or I will puke. I have a brother - if we made out and then I found out he was my brother, I think I'd want to die. I hope deep down Clary and Jace know they aren't related . I just can't get my mind around romantically kissing my brother. I'd be curious to know for those that still want them to be together regardless - do you have siblings? (maybe that's where the difference of opinion comes from??)

I think the chat with the Inquisitor is the key to the incest issue. She gave a hint to being his mother- unless I read into it what I wanted to hear. I think Valentine's idea of brother and sister is different from a conventional definition. Maybe all Shadowhunters are considered siblings because they come from or share the same capabilities.

As soon as I started to see the foreshadowing that they might be brothers & sisters I got sick to my stomach. It was already late and I needed to get to bed but I had to know so I skipped ahead. And I still have not finished it because it honestly makes me sick to my stomach. Right now just thinking about it makes my stomach unsettled. I keep hoping that I can make my stomach settle enough to go back and finish because I liked the book. I just hope this is all some big misunderstanding. By the way I have 6 brothers, just in case you were wondering why I am so weird about this.

I doubt anyone cares but I would like to say that my stomach did settle down weeks later and with some encouragement from some friends I decided to finish City of Bones and read City of Ashes as well. I really enjoyed City of Ashes and look forward to the next one.

I don't think that Clary and Jace are actually related ~ I'm leaning to toward Jace being the Inquisitors grandson...otherwise why bother mentioning that her son's second wife (picked by Valentine) died while 8 months pregnant.

I agree! *(And I am way behind reading this book)- I am so glad I finally did, and I better duck out of here until I've finished the series to avoid spoilers...but I reeeeally like it, the brother/sister thing was sooo painful...and great I guess if you like tragedy!!! Which I must as I didn't get all sick reading this at all...I guess it boils down to what you believe...I still am holding out on it being a big lie!!!

We are all such romatics at heart, aren't we? There are enough clues in the book to at least make us hope and doubt that they are 'true' brother and sister. The overwhelming desire to have them NOT be b&S is universal!

What I worried (and mentioned on one of the cookie threads) is that when they do find out they can be together, that their relationship has not taken enough of a hit over the 3 books for them to hold it together. They have just taken hit after hit and that is bound to take a toll on their love.

Oh man. You have to see the genius in Cassandra's weaving of this story. She has written such an uncomfortable, wrong in so many ways romance into the story and caused most everyone to look the other way while begging for it not to be true. I'm at the point where I don't really seem to care if they are brother and sister  because I don't want it to be true.

The idea that you can fall in love, then are expected to stop feeling that way instantly because of who you are is the heartwrenching part of it for Jace and Clary. I do believe that it can be resolved. I don't believe that they share the same parents. I believe that "brother and sister" from Valentine's perspective will be something different than what we are expecting. I think Clary and Jace are going to come out of the whole thing a bit differently than they went in though. I think family will have new meaning for them.

Very well said! Those are my thoughts exactly, though I wanted to scream out "NO!" while reading this.
