ok... I picked up The Host the other night, and just like each in the Twilight series, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I finished it last night, and it was wonderful. I was really worried about reading it, and comparing it to Twilight, but it is an entity all its own.
Read it. It is as well rounded as Twilight, and, although there is talk of sequel's, the ending isn't left open. I was very content with the ending, and although I would love sequels, I could live happily with the Host as it is! :D
It is definitely helping to sate my appetite for BD while I wait! I needed something else to read. I've been beating up my TS books by reading them so often. (I think I'm on round 5!)

i wasnt planning on reading The Host either. I wasnt really interested in it...except for the fact that Stephenie wrote it.

So i gave in. It took me a couple chapters to finally get into it....but Holy Moley....I LOVED it! I coulnt put it down. It was pretty much all i thought about at work when i couldnt read it. LOL

Personally, I like how The Host ended. A sequel could possibly work but I am content. :)

I know! That's what I like about SM; no matter how much thinking I do about her books, she always surprises me! I can't wait for a sequel.

I have considered reading it after I finish revamping the Twilight series for the 3rd time. My friend who started me on Twilight has it but I am not sure if I want to read it until after BD, since it is getting soooo close!

Ditto, but I sure would love to read more if she wrote it!
If you are debating whether or not to read The Host, I say pick up a copy. It was awesome. I like a little sci-fi and this was just enough. It was truly more about the state of humanity and the different levels of love and emotion that comes with being human. After a few chapters I was hooked!

If time is your concern, have no worries. Just like the Twilight series you will love it so much you will have it finished in plenty of time to still anxiously await BD. I read The Host in just a little over a week.

I know this may be blasphemous, but I actually had a harder time leaving The Host alone than I did the Twilight saga. (Which is saying a lot... it wasn't easy to make those last very long, either.) Maybe it was because with the Twilight books, I had pretty much devoured everything on Stephenie's website while I was waiting for NM and EC to arrive in the mail, so I had an idea of what was coming. With The Host, I pointedly stayed away from anything that might tell me what would happen... and I was worried sick about how it would end. :) My husband kept saying, "Pace yourself! If you read it too fast, it will be over, and it will be months before you get a new one!" But I couldn't stand it, so even though I did attempt to pace myself, it only took me three days to read it.

Anyway, what I mean to say is that I agree with Shasta--you may be able (or be compelled!) to finish faster than you think. :D

I'm currently reading The Host and I'm already head over heals in love. Stephenie is one of the greatest writers of our time...right up there with Stephen King and Ann Rice.
This books really makes you stop and think about human nature and why we are the way we are. Do others really know what's best for us?

It's taking me a while to get through only because I started reading it right before my husband and I had to move but once I get some free time I'm diving my head back in and I probably won't come up for air until I'm finished.
