Half of my family immigrated from Poland 100 years ago, and my Polish-born babcia (grandmother in Polish) used to fix a dish called czarnina for my mother when she was a child. Babcia called it "chocolate soup," and my mother gobbled it right up until the day when she found out that czarnina was actually duck's blood soup.

My mom never ate that sweet-and-sour "chocolate soup" ever again, but I think Edward would approve! If anyone's brave enough to try making it at home (say, if Edward's coming over for dinner), here's a recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Duck-Soup-Czarnina/Detail.aspx

LOL yeah theres no way I'm brave enough to try this...I have issues cutting into a piece of meat and coming across a vein.

It's like Black Pudding - how could anything with the word "pudding" not be good? Oh...right.

Sort of like Sweet Breads...which are not sweet and are not made from bread. *shudder*

Yeah - I tried head cheese earlier this year! It is not cheese and it is made from an animal's head. Yech!

I cannot believe that people are dissing Czarnina. It is totally delicious. First, you don't taste blood when you eat it; it has spices, fruits, and usually, you can enjoy it with mixed in cooked noodles or a side bowl.

Yes, I'm of Polish descent and we ate Polish cuisine all the time when I was growing up. While I didn't like every weird "Peasant Food" dish that was put in front of me, Czarnina was a family favorite.
