After reading the synopsis, they all for the most part sound like horrid people, but the story still intrigues me...

I think that for its almost palpable portrayal of atmosphere and mood, WH has few equals. It's worth it for that alone.

But I also think it's a useful endeavor because it forces people to consider the questions,

"What is the true nature of Love?"

and,

"Is Love at all costs ever a good thing?"

Seriously, at what point does what people call "romantic love" become utterly selfish? Or is it always that way? Think about Bella & Edward. We're all enthralled by their "deep, true, abiding, eternal love," but are they also being completely selfish/self-ish by indulging it at all costs? Just asking!

Love. (Romantic love). In a purely biological sense it's the urge to partner up and procreate, or partner up and enhance one's chances for survival. We can reduce it to an animalistic level pretty easily.

But it also inspires the most ecstatic and grandiose emotions, not to mention actions, that we ever experience. And those, or the desperate search for them, can often get in the way of survival!

So what IS it??

I think WH asks this question, explores it, and leaves us to decide.

I think the book addressed obsessive love, love to enhance one's survival and elevate oneself in society, and love for vengeance. I think we all think of love for all the warm fuzzy feelings it generate, but love can also make people go mad and do stupid things! Look at Heathcliff ripping off one side of Catherine's coffin to take a peek, and to prepare for his own internment, he expressed that one side of his coffin be ripped out too, so he and Catherine lay side by side...while Edgar rest on the other side of Catherine.

One thing I did not like about the book, was how some of the dogs were treated...Heathcliff hung Isabella's dog, and Hareton hung puppies, too!

In the end, Hareton got the happiness: He got the properties, he became educated, and he got the girl!
