But that does raise a BIG question regarding Esme. If she was with Carlisle the whole time - and has such a gentle soul - I can't imagine that she would have killed any humans! Hmmm ... If Stephenie doesn't address this in BD (which we, of course, have to wait for *sigh*) then I hope she at least gives us her thinking on at what point Esme slipped, even if it's just in an 'outtake' section of her web site.

That is odd, because Carlisle turned her, she woke up and saw him, I would think that from the start he would have her work toward a veggievamp.

I also thought that Alice, because of her visions, did not kill either, because she knew where her future was.
I also thought that Alice, because of her visions, did not kill either, because she knew where her future was.
But wasn't Alice on her own for quite a while until she found Jasper and then they sought out Carlisle. I would guess that Alice and Jasper did lots of hunting together before finding Carlisle since Jasper, obviously, was quite the voracious drinker of human blood. She seemed quick, from what I've read, to change her habits to "vegetarianism."

Yes Alice was on her own for quite sometime and than with Jasper. I was thinking that her visions caused her to see the whole veggie thing before she found Carlisle, but maybe not. I must go research, again.

I wanted to add, regarding Esme, Stephenie said at the Nashville Signing (New Moon - not Eclipse) that Esme has a difficult time as well with the blood thirst. Its one of the reasons she stays at home. Notice how she was so quick to leave as Bella lay bleeding on the flood in New Moon. She was ashamed of her thirst, but she was obviously having extreme difficulty with it. I know, it is still terrible difficult to picture Esme that way. Her motherly nature is so lovingly portrayed, any else seems unatural to us.

Thus is the beauty of Stephenie Meyer's writing. While we love the characters, she is sure to make sure they are "human" - they have faults, like the rest of us. And, like the rest of us, they try to rise above that which drags them down.

I think it's amazing and romantic that Esme had met Carlisle before and then he was the one to turn her. It's sweet. I mean, we think it is here. Others might not, lol.

I love that Esme and Carlisle had a connection prior to her being changed. I think it is one of the things that made their bond strong. I think it will be the same way for Bella, being that she chose him before she was a vampire. And under different circumstances, I think Esme would have done the same.

Interesting thoughts on Esme. Maybe she's a lot like us...often takes care of the homefront, but there's a naughty side hiding beneath that maternal personna. Look at our hotties pages and the guy in the sleevless white shirt in the jar...we all have a naughty side!! Esme's naughty side just involved a little blood lust, that's all. Hehehe.

And in answer to the question. I actually asked this at the Cinci Signing. She said, that all of the Cullens except for Carlisle and Rosalie have killed ALOT of people. She was very dramatic with the word ALOT. We aren't talking one or two slip-ups over their life time. We are talking about a large number of killings between Edward, Esme, Alice, and Emmett.

I have to say that this surprised me about Esme! Now I have to read through all of the Esme bits again to wrap my mind around this information! Thanks for sharing!

Wow, I am surprised about Esme too. I just thought with her gentle soul that she "knew" how to avoid the thirst, like when she left Bella when she was bleeding.

Gee, if SM doesn't address Esme's and others' 'wilder' side in BD, perhaps some of our fan(fic)tastic writers might delve into some creative stories to share with us, eh?? Those would be fun to read!!
