Cassandra asks,

6. What do you think is the significance of Downworlders in the world of the series?

How do they parallell groups of people/political situations in the real world?

What function do you think they'll serve by the end of the books?

~~discuss~~

The Downworlders are extremely significant. For one, I think they will make up the army that defeats Valentine! The faeries have already proved how important they are, along with the fabulicious Magnus Bane. Without their help, I'm not sure Jace and Clary would've made it this far!

LOL! Love your new word ...fabulicous! Magnus Bane...I have such an awesome mental image of him in my head! LOVE HIM!

I think the downworlders have such a negative stigma to them.. I hope they can band together and rise up and show they are not the scum the Shadowhunters make them out to be. As one - the downworlders and the shadowhunters - they could easily band together and take down Valentine. But the shadowhunters are going to have to get over their "big, bad selves" to let that happen though.

He is fabulicious, isn't he?!?! Love, love, love him!

The downworlders are going to have unite with the shadowhunters to defeat Valentine. Neither group can do it alone and it will only be after they agree to fight together that Valentine will be brought down.

They are all going to have to overcome their prejudices (vampires and werewolves for example) and realize that they have to work together if they want to save their world and themselves.

I think the Downworlders in the Shadowhunter world are very much like minority groups in our world. They are looked down upon because they are different and possibly less fortunate than Shadowhunters, or Mundanes. It seems very clear to me that Shadowhunters can be very 'racist' or in this case 'speciesist'. Many of them, including Jace at times, think they are better and should have more rights than the other 'lower' species.

I think the Downworlders will definately be what makes or brakes any victory against Valentine.

Yes totally agree with that. Some people stronly belive they are superior than others, for whatever reason, they belive they are better. I belive the downworlders are gonna make the difference in the war. They(with their numbers) are gonna help decide who is goin to win.

I was trying to think of a word to decribe it and you nailed it. "speciesist". (that is so hard to say) Jace definetely has moments where he appears like a "speciesist". His slang terms for Simon and others that are not of his kind, but he definetely chooses when he feels that way.

It usually takes a war for the leaders (Shadowhunters) to realize they need the foot soldiers (Downworlders) though.

I could not agree with this more, I think you hit the nail on the head! I am also another Magnus Bane fan, I love it when he shows up in the two books Mr. Green

Hmm... I never thought about it. But now that I do, I bet it has to do with letting go of our ego's and coming together, especially at times of crisis. Like when 9/11 happened, we were all just human beings that needed each other. Social status was completely thrown out the window. It didn't matter if we were homeless, or milllionaires, or prostitutes, or presidents. We were people of a nation, caring for each other. I thought it was so amazing.

WE ARE ALL CHILDREN OF GOD AND WE NEED EACH OTHER.

Most of your replies are very well said!! Okay all of them are..probably the only thing that I can add to this discussion is that the Shadowhunters and the Downworlders will learn through defeating Valetine that they need each other more than they would care to admit.
