I totally fell for Jared when he was his hopeful, carefree self. However, I fell a bit out-of-love with him soon after, and the whole beginning through the middle of the book was downright painful to read. It was like the main section of New Moon all over again. He turned into an absolute beast--and yes, I am aware that it was because he had lost almost everything when he lost Melanie. He was a changed person--and frankly, I didn't like that person.

I *tried* not to do character comparisons but Jared's reaction made me think of how Edward may have reacted to, say Jane, basically killing Bella. He would have been changed, and not for the better. Jared's reactions were so real for me, I felt for him so much.

But I am probably biased. My only complaint about the entire book is I would have loved more J/M memories and something more than a paragraph when Melanie had her body back.

I think we'll have to wait for outtakes or "Midnight Host" to get Melanie's perspective. Laughing

Oh my gosh, I hope there are outtakes! That's got to be my one major complaint about the book--that there was not enough of Jared and Melanie.

Oh, and I am definitely Team Ian too.

I was totally bothered with him beating the crap out of her either. I was hoping that he would have softened his heart towards her much sooner and then I was hoping for some seriously hot alien-human lovin', but he would have betrayed his love for Melanie if he did that. Although, I still yearned for it...

I totally understand how Jared's physical abuse of Wanderer bothered people, but the great part is that he changed. His character development felt real, and by the end he wouldn't have hurt either Melanie/Wanda for anything.

The thing that made me fall for Jared was his relationship with Jamie. He clearly loved Jamie and put Jamie's feelings ahead of his own desires to hurt Wanderer.

There are so many blanks in Jared's early relationship with Melanie. My one and only complaint about the book is that I wanted to read so much more about them!

or other aliens for that matter. I am glad that you mentioned that he changed, developed, and matued as his experiances gave him more knowleadge about aliens (aliens doesn't seem to feel like the right word for wanda and the other souls but I can't think of a better one) and I think that it is important to note that he did change. He changed to the extent that he didn't even harm the menacing and irrate seeker. That is a huge jump for the man he was when wanda first entered the caves.

Now that I've read the book, and some of the comments people have made about Jared, ie, they don't like him, they like Ian more, he's not the guy for them, he's angry, not as compassionate...etc.

I still like Jared...*ducking from stones*

I was looking at the first of the book again, and I was reminded of Melanie's memories of the happy, loving Jared.
I can't imagine the pain he was in, when he first saw Wanderer in Melanie's body. Believeing that a 'parasite' has
taken your loved one away. I understand his anger and resentment.
I think it's easier for Ian to accept Wanderer, before Jared could accept her, because Ian didn't have the
memories of Melanie's love.

There are a lot of good/great things about Jared.
He helped Wanderer escape to get medicine for Jamie. No one else did, nor would have.
He even said that he didn't think they would make it back. But that it was better to die trying, than to live without Jamie.
Jared is still compassionate, loving, strong and practical.
Jeb said that's why Jared's best at getting what they need. Because he can do what has to be done.
r watch what has to be done. Even when watching's harder than doing...pg 471.

Yes...I am still a huge fan of Jared... Rolling Eyes

I'm with you Dawn33, I'm a Jared Fan, but more of an Ian fan, not the point though. I understand why Jared hit her. I understand his hostiliity. I love how he changed through the book.

Don't get me wrong...I'm a huge Ian fan as well. I love'em both.
I wouldn't kick either of them out of bed for eating crackers... Wink

And...I would have liked to see more memories of Jared and Melanie, I'm sure they are there.
And I would have liked to see more shtuff with Ian and Wanderer as well.
I'm all about the kissin' and huggin'. But I don't read romances, so
I was really hoping for more 'physical' action in The Host.
I wouldn't have minded if the book were a couple of 100 pages more or so. Rolling Eyes
But what can a girl do.

Go Jared! Go Ian! Mr. Green

I had a really difficult time getting to the point where I really liked Jared. He was capable of so much hatred and animosity that I didn't think it would be possible for Stephenie to redeem him in my eyes. But, she did and I ended up really liking him by the end of the book. I think the way I felt for him is similar to the way that I feel towards Jacob. I love him and understand why he did everything that he did throughout the book but that doesn't mean that I liked or agreed with them all. I was so relieved that he was able to get Melanie back without sacrificing Wanda in the end.

Jared is one of my favorite characters. He reminded me of Edward in some ways. Mostly because of his jealousy for Wanda/Melanie.

I felt for Jared because Melanie came back not a human. Come on gals! Men get angry when they are depressed! Jared's emotions had to be out of control! Through out the book, his emotions change for Wanda/Melanie and oooh, I loved him, too!

By the end of the book I really liked Jared. I also really liked him in the very beginning... but in the middle I was not so sure. I think his anger is completely understandable though... If I was living in a world like that, and my love was the person who had been taken and I thought they were no longer human... and no longer my love, I would KICK their trash! I would beat the tar out of them and if I was able to be convinced that my love was still in there it would take a verrrrry long time I think. So, I totally understand where he is coming from. If the book were written from his perspective we would see a whole other side I think.

Alright...I just revamped (re-hosted?) most of the book and I was able to better understand Jared. He was deeply conflicted throughout the book. The loss of Melanie left him damaged.

It was easier to feel for Jared knowing that in the end he would redeem himself and come around
