i think he might have felt everything that you mentioned here, and more. he might have felt a little panicky too. bella's admission of her own attraction to edward only served to heighten the struggle he was already feeling then about what he wanted and what was the right thing to do. poor edward. he so very much wanted to do what was right, even at the expense of his own happiness. it's a good thing he eventually gave in and allowed themselves to fall in love with each other -- he deserves to be happy, innately good being that he is.

I'm starting to think that deep down in his heart, he knows he has a soul. Maybe it is even a subconscious knowledge, but I think he does know. However, he is so terrified of getting his hopes up and being wrong that it is easier to believe that he is a monster and damned to Hell. That would be easier to accept that thinking you still have a soul and being wrong - that kind of surprise would not be good at all. I hope that in MS we get a clearer picture of his thoughts on the whole "soul" issue. I really want to understand where he is coming from.
*now that i re-read that, maybe it is just wishful thinking. I don't know....*

I think that he *has* to know that, at least on some level. Otherwise, he never would have said what he did when Bella showed up in Italy in NM. But yes, he would be so afraid to let himself think that, to have hope, if there's the possibility that he's wrong and could have those hopes crushed. It would devastate him to be wrong about that, and I really don't think he could handle being wrong about THAT. Poor, poor Edward.

Couldn't have put it better!!!
Now, to find that place inside of him.
To see, to search, to know for himself...
that he truely does have a soul.

I agree, yogagurl. I am sure that Edward is more worthy of a soul than many of us. |
Edward has more compassion, more understanding, and more humanity than 90% of the people I deal with on a daily basis! Of course he has a soul

I don't know how he can possibly think he lost his soul by becoming what he is? How can Edward be punished for something that is NOT his fault? That's beyond unfair.
I don't even blame Carlisle, who had extremely good motives. Edward's mother sensed in some way that Carlisle was capable of something extraordinary, and she begged him.
Yes, vampires can have souls, at least the way the Cullens do it, as Bella put it.

your post has me wondering why edward thinks that he has lost his soul just by becoming a vampire in the first place? was it a given when you get converted, a common, traditional belief among his kind? that one was automatically "damned" when changed? was there a passage in the book that refered to this particular belief? i don't remember having seen any. or maybe stephenie has a back story to this somewhere that i haven't seen.
i for one don't believe edward doesn't have a soul. how can you be that kind and humane if you don't have a soul?

Thank you Utterly, I wondered the same thing. I believe Edward thinks his soul is damned to hell when/if he dies but I don't think that he thinks he doesn't have a soul. IMHO

today, what i really want to see in edward's point of view is the scene where they were racing to save bella from the clutches of james. i'd like to know his initial and ensuing reactions from the time that he learned that bella got away from jasper and alice to the time when he got to the ballet studio and saw james again for the first time since getting to phoenix. how tortured he must have been, searching frantically for bella, hoping that he won't be too late and all. a bit sad i know, but this scene, i believe, helped edward further realize just how vital bella is to his existence, how much he really loves her.

I think Edward knows he has a soul, he is just such a black/white person. It's either good or bad for him. Since he has done "bad" things then he doesn't acknowledge the good side, he sees himself as the bad guy. I hope we see into this in NM.
