I'm determined to get the book done today so I can participate in the discussions this time. The last 2 books I was late getting them read so I missed out on discussing them. I'm about half way through. It's a really fast easy read.

Who else is reading or has read it?

I'm a little surprised at the amount of language and crudeness in this book... Is this book similar to what you will find in most Young Adult books now days?

I was so surprised too! I hope that isn't how most YS books are now days. If that's the case, things have really changed over the last 10 yrs since I was in HS. lol
I reposted my review of the book, as I posted it a few days ago and wasn't thinking when I did. I read through the book pretty quick too. If you take out the swearing, it's a good book. The writting is amazing and Junior is such a strong fighter and wonderful character.

Language is a big part of a lot of books these days.
I can think of a few that i have read in the last year that were particulary full of colorful language, but i don't think they are all like that or that it is a hallmark of YA books. I think it depends on the setting of the book, and what the characters are

I finished it.

mailed it to Sarahpat...

..glad to get rid of it!

LOL - sorry about being so negative.

...Language was too much for me, too.... ONLY because it is directed towards teens. I mean is it really necessary to drop the f bomb? DOn't get me wrong. I am not a prude who cannot handle it. But if I am reading a YA book, I would think it would be less crass. Maybe this was written for teen boys! LOL!...or pirates... LOL! Sorry I will be good now.

I feel you on this one. I am about halfway through it but it is tough; not one for much language. I have to go back and read "Eclipse" now and then to keep me sane! One chapter Indian book, one chapter Eclipse, etc.

While I think there were a few choice words in there, I don't think they were overly abused...It wasn't like every other word was a bad one, or anything. I found it funny. But I was a little surprised that it was supposed to be a teen novel. I guess it's not bad if a 17 year old was reading it...

Surprisingly the language does not bother me... The whole book has me laughing out loud. I love it :)

The language can be harsh at times, but I think it's a pretty realistic reflection of the way teenage boys think and speak. Junior did not live in a Leave it to Beaver-world, so we can't expect squeaky-clean language!

I agree. I think that is why I kept reading it... it seemed true to life to how I've heard many teenagers talk. Personally it's not language I've ever used but it didn't come across as offensive as some language I've read in other books.

...maybe it was a combination of having just read Enthusiasm and I am in the process of re-vamping Twilight that made this book somewhat crass for me. I guess I also see things from an Elementary Teacher's perspective....

The language was shocking, yes...but that didn't stop me from reading it and finishing it.

I'm a dork, I never answered your question when I replied. I finished it within a day. It was a book I couldn't put down and it was also a quick read too. Like I said before, it's one where you want to cry, but you find yourself laughing instead. I laughed out loud a lot. I didn't think I could emotional get into a book that wasn't part of the Twilight series, but I did with this book.

I finished it in 2 nights... ( darn amazon was slow with my shipping!)

I would recommend it and pass it on.
Its one of those books that everyone should read.
Very different from anything I usually read.
Which made me really happy to have it as a book club pick! It made me think in a whole new way.

but I'll take a true story of overcoming obstacles and making something of yourself anyday!
