Hey, Rhonda, I haven't read it since high school, and I'm about as far as you got the first time. My copy has a really long introduction that I read carefully. Now I want to make sure I don't miss anything that Stephenie might give as a discussion topic.

I read page 1 several weeks ago and promptly returned it to the library. I got it again yesterday. I read the introduction portion in CliffsNotes last night and got through chapter one. It was much better having read the cliff notes! I am going to get through it this time!

Lovely. So do you recommend reading the clift notes along with the book then? I'm on my way to B&N later today....

I would recommend the Cliffnotes. If nothing else to explain some of the hard to understand words and phrase.

I started reading it in early December and lasted 3 weeks, making it 1/2 way through and then gave up. I really want to pick it up again just so I can avoid having to totally admit defeat... And I want to participate!!! I'm not finding the characters so detestable as the style it's narrated in. It was just taking me too long and I don't have that kind of patience anymore! My book also has a lot of footnotes which helps immensely with the... (can't think of the word) dialects?

All the books I read from that era were very proper, respectful, and wholesome. Although I didn't LOVE the book I was kind of amused that someone back then wrote such a shocking, ugly, and crass story. I'm sure there's a lot more out there, but this is a classic. I was not expecting it.

The book is written from several different viewpoints. Initially from that of Mr Lockwood who as an outsider is the mechanism used to explain the story so far to us, the reader.

Sarah, I'm in the same boat as you!!! I'm so confused my head hurts! I read two chapters today, and let me tell you...I feel like a complete idiot, because I didn't understand half of the stuff that I read. I'm not sure I even understand what the introduction was about! Question I'm going to keep trying, but to be honest, I don't think I'll be participating in this month's book... Crying or Very sad

I used the links Lisa provided to read it online. I print out the chapter review first, then print/read the chapter. The links are phenomenal and I'm blazing through it. Chapter 6 already! I suggest you use the links Lisa provided in another thread!
