Ok, I am going for the simplest explanation here. If it had been digital it wouldn't have fit in the story. Edward would have had to delete the photo from her camera possibly her computer and the disc she would have had made if she went somewhere to get it developed, along with taking the picture.
It would have made the whole edward showing up on film questions erelivent. A memory card would have held a lot more pictures and the kids at school wouldn't have used up all the film.
To fit into the story the way it did it had to be a traditional camera. Digital would have been wrong. |
Good logic Kat N Hat! |
Very true my memory card holds something like 300 pics.

Wow - I had never even thought of these points before, but they all make sense. I just thought the Cullen's all had cell phones (at least when they take Bella to AZ) and they use them a lot on Eclipse. But Bella doesn't have one, or even seem to want one. I guess that does make sense since it's a smaller town. I will ponder this! |
I wouldn't imagine she ever gave a cell phone much thought. The reception is really poor in areas around Forks. My phone usually works in places many others do not, but I had no service in La Push, or for most of the trip between Forks and Port Angeles. _________________ "You're not going to budge me on this."

I kind of like that Charlie is so old-fashioned .
I mean, just think about the difference in between what Charlie thinks is a nice expensive gift compared to what the Cullens' think is a nice expensive gift . Bella has almost next to nothing while Edward can purchase anything that he wants. _________________ ...and the lion fell in love with the lamb

Wow, this question has been bugging me forever. I kept flipping to the front to check what year the books were published!
Where I live, cellphones have been around forever and most people I know have more than one. I guess I just took it for granted that cells have become a part of most of the developed world.

One of the themes in the book is the clash between the modern and traditional world. Going to Forks has thrown this very modern teenager back into the past, so far back that she drives a truck that could be your car's grandfather. She is surrounded by classic literature and a house that hasn't been physically changed in 17 years.
She's also poor and worries a lot about money. Cell phones and teenagers equals money. And the previous point about digital cameras being more expensive. The Cullens can afford this though. I don't see anyone else in Forks with such devices. _________________ Lauralee

LOL! I didn't know this thread existed! Had I known I would have directed you here but I guess the cellphone dilemma has crossed more people's minds!
I'd mentioned this to snarky already, but in a town of less than 4000, cellphones really seem more like a luxurious accessory than a necessity. I have never lived in a town that small, but I have friends and relatives who have, and if a place has less than 4000 people living in it, getting in touch with one another might not be such a big issue, especially since Forks isn't all that spread out like, say, Phoenix. In bigger cities where life seems a little more rushed and people barely have time for breakfast, a cellphone might be more necessary to get a hold of others.
As for Bella herself not having one, I imagine that she didn't have one in Phoenix either. I dunno - Renee just doesn't seem the type who would encourage her daughter to have a cellphone and she doesn't strike me as the cellphone-type mom either. If this is the case, then Bella really has even less incentive to ask for a cellphone in Forks.... although since she's an accident prone danger-magnet, one would think she would need one in case of vampiric emergencies...

True True. But bella wouldn't have wanted the Cullens to buy her a cell phone and pay the monthly bill. she didn't even want them to give her birthday presents let alone pay a monthly bill for a nonessential. But when I used to live in the tiny town of Lobelville TN, (I lived their from 2000-2002 in the year 2000 the census reported a population of 915) with tons of trees and no cell towers getting a cell signal was sketchy at best, so guess what most of the people (not all) I knew didn't have cell phones. I wouldn't guess that bella would want one though even if it were cheap and convineint. Bella doesn't strike me as the phone permenently attached to her head type. Other than the Cullens, who she is with anyway who the heck would she want to talk to so bad that couldn't wait till she got home? Charlie? Renee? Jessica? Mike Newton? Maybe jake, but if his dad can't afford to replace his shoes, he sure couldn't afford a cell phone, and it would be only for bella aince the wolves have built in cell phones. _________________

Well, SM said that the CD Phil gave Bella (which Edward also had in his car) was Linkin Park, which to me is a band that came about after the digital era started.
Really?? That's awesome to know! Now I can put a name to the cd. I was wondering what they would both be listening to. LOL Funny. I love Linkin Park. It's one of the few bands dh and I can agree on. _________________ Bella Cullen is a now a member of Twilight Moms.

Perhaps is another illustration of how Bella is somewhat deprived of material things (although Renee did get her some pajamas from Victoria's Secret) and not necessarily have the right stuff to make her belong with the "it crowd".
Charlie all of a sudden had her, and he had been disconnected with what teens have typically. Renee is so flighty, wrapped in herself as a newlywed...They have the best intention for her, but they both just do not seem to connect with her that way. _________________

Disconnected is a perfect description of Charlie and Renee'. Chief Swan or not. I can't believe he didn't pack up and move to be close to his daughter or Renee' at least thinking about taking a child from her father and the ramifications. Well the disfunction is why we get these wonderful novels. Since it's fictional I guess we can deal with it.

Besides, I think Charlie and Renee talked about what to buy Bella hence the scrapbook photo album to put the pictures in. You can't really do that as well with a digi. My hubby loves his Digi but I'm a stickler for my cannon rebel 35mm. To me a photo isn't a photo til I hold it in my hand. Bella is an old soul, doesn't seem to be too fussed for the modern gadgets, she loved her old truck. I don't think she'd be too enthused for a digi.
As an afterthought, Bella is clumsy. Perhaps Charlie and Renee didn't want to spend a small fortune on her only for her to break it the first day she has it? _________________ ~ Lusty ~

Maybe Charlie is old fashioned? He doesn't even have cordless phones in his house. How aggravating to have to go downstairs to get the phone. Bella has a line in her room for the computer, why doesn't she get a cheap phone so she can have privacy?
Cell phone thought; maybe reception is bad there...lots of wilderness and lots of 'don't build that here' types.
As far as the camera goes....I'm voting old fashioned. _________________ Do you ever think that your life might be easier if you weren't in love with me?
