I think I understand, and anyone may correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand a "ship" or "ships" (from my teenage daughter, of course) is/are: The pairing of different characters from the books. So, instead of Bella and Edward, one may want Bella and Emmett, or Rosalie and Jasper, or Carlisle and Alice. Also, I think pictures go along with this theory. It's probably something the teens are doing to keep themselves busy until "Breaking Dawn" is released, but my daughter is really serious about this. She files and files of this stuff on the computer. Anyone else out there experiencing the same thing?

I found the following entry on Urban Dictionary:

1. ship

N: Short for romantic relationship, popularized in fanfiction circles.

V: To endorse a romantic relationship.

N: I see a 'ship developing between Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

V: I ship Ron/Hermione

I think it was easier to do for HP because they had such a huge variety of characters to "ship" with each other. Obviously Hermione and Ron were going to end up together, but I did enjoy the fanfics with Hermione and Draco. The whole love trumps hate scenario made me smile. I also liked the fanfics where Harry and Draco became good friends. I may just have a fondness for the idea of bad guys showing they have some good in them, I dunno. Some of the "ships" for Harry Potter were just absurd though. Ridiculously absurd and obscene.

I cant see any way to "ship" any characters in Twilight because they're all pretty much destined to be with their partners. Bella and Edward, Carlisle and Esme, Alice and Jasper, Emmett and Rosalie. Pairing any of them with anyone else would just be......... I dunno.... one of the blackest forms of blasphemy in my opinion. Hahaha.

I do like the idea of shipping Jacob with Angela though, that would be a nice pair up I think.

So I know ships are fun in fanfic and I like some of them...but ladies BEWARE of "SLASH"!!! If the fanfic says SLASH on it you may not want to read it. Slash is the pairing of two characters that would NEVER be together and usually refers to homosexual pairs. I've seen several that are Edward/Carlisle Slash or Edward/Jacob Slash. These are usually rate NC17, but I'd thought I'd throw the definition out there so you are all aware in case you werent before. Smile

Thank you for letting us know Tamia. I actually was talking to someone the other day who came across the Edward/Carlisle fanfic, and she's now been put off reading fanfic after that one. Not because of the homosexual content, but because she felt with those two characters, it boardered on something more sinister. It's good to know that there is a definition for these as SLASH, so we can steer away if we don't want to read them.

I don't know if this creeps anyone else out, but I recently found an old school friend via myspace. When I saw her page I was pretty shocked at what she was into. She was into artworks of Harry and Draco making out. Now I'd be ok with that if the characters were adults, but they aren't the artworks are pictures of kids half naked and making out. Does that strike anyone else as a bit paedo?

Shocked

*feels vomit rise in throat*

Totally paedo!! That is disgusting!! What is wrong with people!!

*shudders*

Last night I was looking for some Supernatural pickies on PB, and someone had done multiple pics, loops or vid of Dean & Sam making out (or worse). They looked totally realistic, because everything had been edited together so well. And they are BROTHERS on the show! I think if people are going to put stuff up like that (and why would you want to) that they should keep it in their private accounts so the rest of us don't have to see it.

Hey everyone! Thanks to Tamia for this warning. It is really useful for us "non-lingo" speakers. Rather than discuss this term further, or discuss the odd or blech-inducing things that we run across, let's use the definition given in post #2 of this thread. Hopefully that will keep this thread from containing information that may be offensive to other TMs, actors, Steph, etc. Wink

I have never heard "ships" used that way! I think that's awesome of them, what a great game. I'm going to start using it and see if it catches on, I have two teenagers in my house. Wink
