Again, with the boards locked, it gave me time to think about some of what I was reading. (Like locking the boards would stop me from obsessing) While revamping Eclipse, this line struck me.

"...and despite my growing discomfort with this whispered dream, I sank deeper into unconciousness...into other dreams that made more sense..."

This is in the tent after she listens to Jacob and Edward have their talk. I was wonder, with as vivid as Bella's dreams are, what do you think the "other" dreams that made more sense were? (The trailing off at the end is all SM) I wonder if it is something she will bring back in BD? Usually when Bella's dreams are mentioned, they have signifigance.

So, this line just struck me this time when I read it. Any thought?

If I were to "fill in the blanks" after those trailing dots I would focus on what she says about dreams that "made more sense" than what she thought she was hearing.

What probably didn't fit for her was lying there in Jacob's arms, in a sleeping bag while Edward watched. Weird. What didn't make sense was Jacob and Edward openly speaking of their respective feelings for her while she lay there passively. What didn't make sense was being in a freezing tent, wind keening around outside waiting for a huge vampire/werewolf/other vampire showdown.

So what would make sense? Dreams of being in Edward's arms instead of Jacob's. Dreams of happy times in sunny meadows with Edward. Dreams of simple times next to campfires listening to native legends. And frankly probably any dreams would make more sense than this crazy situation in which they found themselves!!!!

I think you got a point. I think the whole vampire showdown is a bit too much for our dear Bella and trying to dream about something a little less crazy might be a comfort for her.

Also, Bella and Jacob have thoughts about "what if we lived in a normal world, without vampires and werewolves", maybe she's drifting into a dream were non of these creatures exists. Well, just a thought...

I think you're right also. What a wierd situation to be in. The unfortunate thing is while she's confused and tired and would rather sleep, we're all wishing we could be in that tent with those two. Oh well, we can "Dream" right?

This is definitely how I read it, the whole situation Edward and Jacob's 'truce' as they called it, made absolutely no sense to her.

I've lent out my copy of eclipse so I can't qoute it exactly. But the morning after they talk about what she said in her dreams. I think she said, "Edward", &, "my Jacob".

The conversation between Edward & Jacob was only partly there because Edward was reading Jakes mind. So that is why the dream didn't make sense. She wasn't hearing the whole conversation. But when she slipps in to "real" dreams, she understand it more. (I know I often "know" what is going on in my dreams because "I" know it, not because the person says it in my dreams) Her dreams that made more sense were probably a continuation of the truce between Edward & her Jacob in her head.

The thing that bothers me about the quote is the trailing off at the end. SM talks about Bella talking in her sleep, but usually when she refers to her dreams she describes them and as we all know, they tend to foreshadow.
Now, i totally suck at picking up the foreshadowing stuff, but I had a thought that this might be revisited in BD. If the sentence had ended with a period, I don't think I would have even thought twice about it. But SM is so clever and I don't think she used that particular tool for no reason.

Hmm, I'd never thought of SM telling us what Bella dreamed about. Interesting.

I think the way Sm worded the passage you mentioned originally just struck me as her way of creating irony in the book. For me at least, reality usually makes more sense than dreams and so to say dreams that make more sense is kind of a paradox or oxymoron or something along those lines. It's kind of fitting because Bella's "reality" started out as a dream - of SM's!

Ok, I know that was quite a rambling post so you get bonus points if you followed my logic!

This is something that one of my friends brought up once. She suggested that BD would end with Bella waking up. That it was all a dream. Bummer.

I cannot imagine Stephenie would do that to us.

Noooooooo! Not a dream!

I also think that Bella's dreams have some siginificance regarding what her power will be.

Speaking to the quote above, many of us have gotten very wrapped up on different threads with how masterful SM is with weaving symbology etc, definitely including myself. we all find the most amazing correlations that may or may not really be there. I even put out a question on a thread about whether SM is a genious or just got lucky with all the symbolism. Everyone said that she was genius and purposely wrote all the intricate foresahdowing in there etc. well, this week i read all 6 pages of interview with SM on her thread and was extremely surprised to hear her say that she blew through writing the books and just got them on paper. once in the editing phase she was surprised by how much she could see that was actually foreshadowing or that she could say had deeper meaning that was not oringinally thoughtfully intended to be there. She amazed herself in other words. so that was a little off topic but this forum wouldn't be fun at all if we didn't play the "foreshadowing" game right!

my point is that i am guilty of trying to make more out of it all, but in this case i think it was straight forward. So dreams are very strange 99% of the time. if her dreams seems more logical then their conversation, the holy crap she must have been pretty wigged out by what they were saying. she was probably just dreaming about motorcycle riding with Jake and something mundane with Edward. Her mind would have needed respite from what was coming in the morning. it was likely protecting itself to keep her from dreaming of impending doom in the battle. but if it WERE foreshadowing...hm! i cant think of how it would relate to BD.

i think it trailed off in this case becasue she was falling asleep and her thoughts were trailing and faiding......deeper...........in....to...............sle.............my...ja......cob....

Interesting theory :), this yet another reason why I can't wait for this book :D !!
