3. What do you think Valentine did to Jace and Clary that gave them their crazy powers?

I'm always trying to find clues in the 2 books that prove Jace is not Clary's brother, so I have a theory about Jace and the mortal cup.

The shadowhunters can make more shadowhunters with the mortal cup, and they have the best results when they use young children. So, I wonder if Jace was made a shadowhunter by drinking from the mortal cup (before Jocelyn took it and hid it). We've been debating whether Jace is Valentine's son or Michael Wayland's son, but maybe he is neither. Perhaps he was a young (he would have had to be pretty little before Jocelyn took the cup) mortal boy and Valentine mixed blood that he chose for specific powers. Jace drank the blood and became a shadowhunter with special powers.

This theory wouldn't work for Clary, though. Maybe her powers come from Jocelyn?

Hmmm....this is a tricky one. I *know* it has something to do with blood, since the Faerie Queen made a point to tell Jace to ask what blood flows through him. But I'm so stuck on what he did! I've been studying what the Queen said over and over again, but haven't come up with the answer yet!

"Yours is the gift of words that cannot be spoken," the Queen said to her, "and your brother's is the Angel's own gift. Your father made sure of it, when your brother was a child and before you were even born."

Valentine said the blood of the Angel runs through his blood, and I do believe him to be telling the truth! I'm just not sure what that means exactly! Was it blood drinken from the mortal cup? I really don't know! If I were to think about it using Shawn's scenario, maybe Jocelyn drank out of the cup while she was pregnant! :shock:

That would've worked, right? And Jocelyn has some unusual powers too, as she hid the cup in the deck of tarot cards, right?

I can't wait to find out all of these answers! Cassandra!!! Why do we have to wait until March?!?! I'm dying to know over here!!!!

I am so curious as to what Ms. Clare means by this. I am very new to the whole mythical creatures world and I have to admit that I am still learning what the various creatures' capabilities are. I love that there are faeries in COA and that they are so mischievious and spark my curiousity as to what really is up with Jace's blood. And I am REALLY curious about what is so special about Clary's powers...I am so excited to find out!

I think Jocelyn had a power similar to Clary's. She came from a good lineage of Shadowhunters, so she was probably pretty powerful. Also, remember she said she was afraid of Valentine after he took the Mortal Cup because he would stay in the basement for hours and she sometimes heard screaming. Maybe that was children or people he was trying to turn into Shadowhunters.

I completely agree with everything CaliCat said. He did something with them that was directly from the Angel.

I agree with everything above - but what about Clary? Valentine was out of the picture before she was born and yet the Fairy Queen says "Your father made sure of it, when your brother was a child and before you were even born." How could he has effected the blood of a fetus?!

Well that's what we're speculating...I'm thinking maybe he gave Jocelyn the Angel's blood in the mortal cup while she was pregnant...? That would explain Jocelyn's special talents, and of course it would pass on to the fetus. Whatever he did, I'm think it was something that he did while Jocelyn was pregnant. I think that's what it means when she says, "before you were ever born."

I can't think of another way it would've been done. Anyone have another theory? I'd love to hear some!

I agree. I think Jocelyn drank while she was pregnant or Valentine drank from the cup before Clary was conceived. I don't know what else he could have done.
